I’m so confused by how Reddit is being moderated now. I had someone follow me to various subreddits, responding to every comment I made with a particular anti trans slur, (the one that rhymes with “moon”, not sure if I’m allowed to say it here) and a demand that I join the “41 percent” (which basically means “kill yourself.”) I reported their account, just once, and it was the first time I’d ever reported anyone. A few hours later, I was permanently banned for “abusing the report button”. I tried making another account and was instantly banned. The accounts of other people in my household have also been permanently banned, which is the most confusing part of all of it.
The account that was harassing me is still up as far as I’m aware. So, apparently it’s fine to call people slurs and tell them to die, but they’re not allowed to complain about it.
So, I’m new to this place. I was told it was better.
Reddit is a tool of fascist states now, when they went public the pivoted from a user based buisness model to a government surveillance and propaganda based buisness model.
Can someone (privately if need be) tell me what the slur is? I’m losing my mind coming up with rhyming words for that that have historical offense and I’m coming up short (and I’m american, so the word may not even culturally exist here)
Yeah it’s a slur from 4chan that combines transvestite and goon into troon.
I am ignorant of how strict the language filters are so I’ll let the gods decide my fate.
Thanks, hadn’t heard that one before. Good to know, (without context at least) I’d definitely wouldn’t have recognised it as a slur. Doesn’t help that ‘troon’ happens to be the Dutch word for ‘throne’. 😋
troon just reminds me of those old troom troom videos
Thank you so much. The first part, yikes. But goon? These dudes aren’t even trying to be funny. I must be well and away from 4-chan entirely for me to have not seen that yet
Also confused / ignorant here. The only one I can think of is a slur usually aimed at black people, not trans people. (Starts with C.)
With apologies to anyone who could have done without a reminder of that word, especially if it’s not the one OP’s talking about.
Would you mind linking your old account or some old comments? I’d love to have something substantive to show off to people who don’t believe how fascist Reddit is these days
You got ip banned. Consider that Reddit is owned by Corpo Nazi simps and main admins are Evan Nazis themselves, that should clear up the confusion
At this point, they’re doing everyone a favor by perma-banning in bulk.
The site is foul and we’re all better off moving on
Which is an admin ban, not (just) a mod ban.
No good deed goes unpunished on Reddit.
I caught a temp ban for something similar, and decided to never return.
They accused me of “abusing the report button” for reporting a post that was advocating violence to advance the political agenda of a far right, ethno-nationalist, religious fundamentalist ideology.
Reddit admins are terrorist sympathizers when it advances the class interests of the site’s owners.
I got banned for some of the most benign shit on reddit. I also saw them do nothing about right wing hate. But to hear the story from right wingers, reddit is an echo chamber for the left and they are persecuted unfairly there
OP just figured the arbitrary and capricious limits of the matrix.
Welcome to the fedi where mods are limited to their fiefdom!
Centralized power is cancer
It’s better here. About a third of the accounts are LGBTQties. Check out https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/ for all your trans related needs. Welcome to the nicer part of the internet.
I was banned for calling out antisemitism a half year ago. They’ve been on this bs for a while now. And you were told right. It is considerably better here imo. Still many of the same issues, but moderation is definitely less gross and frustrating, and the people are generally more interesting and interested. Much smaller crowd, though, obviously. Welcome!
A valuable person has joined the fediverse yay 🥳
I tried making another account and was instantly banned.
Reddit does not like ban evasion, and they have the means to check.
The accounts of other people in my household have also been permanently banned, which is the most confusing part of all of it.
So an IP ban more or less, and that is more draconian than I remember.
Glad you saw the darkness and turn toward the light though!
that is more draconian than I remember.
They’ve been banning by IP since at least 2016.
I meant in response to what. Assuming OP tells us the whole story of course.
Must have been an admin that got reported
I don’t see any other way. If OP is telling the truth, reddit nuking their whole household after 1 report sounds like and admin/supermod who got their fee-fees hurt.
Maybe it’s automated and not permanent. I’ve had trouble just trying to log into two accounts (not evading anyhting), and it went away after some time.
Point stands though, reddit are doing their damnedest to turn into the opposite of what they were for over a decade.
Here it’s Russia-China-loving Marxist Leninists you gotta watch out for ;-;
Those came from /r/genzedong and similar tankie boards, so they came from there.
Yep, my first account was made on the wrong instance and I was like “wtf is wrong with everyone here? Like I get corporations fuckin’ suck, but communism???”
They’re also HUGE babies and will claim -ism, -phobia, etc. by stretching the littlest thing.
Worshipping russia isnt communism btw. You are mistaken, use the words wisely
I dont blame you for this position, no wonder america/europe has history of red scare propaganda.
Fuuuuuuck Russia and all its sympathizers. I’m not educated enough to speak with authority on communism vs. capitalism, so I digress there.
Based
I get corporations fuckin’ suck, but communism???
It’s not even actual communism either, but more like tankie-ism. Stalin’s USSR and Mao’s China weren’t communist either, but more like dictatorships / autocracies dressed up with ‘communist principles.’ But I digress, maybe.
No you’re right, I oversimplified and falsely associated the dictatorships that ruled under the guise of “Nah this is communism guys ITS FOR YOU”
Okay, gotcha.
I guess my main reason for piping up there is that the more I’ve learned from history, the more I’ve noticed a wider and wider gap between what it’s like living in actual communes (which to me are probably the closest thing to our traditional living system, i.e. “tribes”), and the huge autocracies which declared themselves “communist.”
The other problem is that many in the west (especially the USA) were either disingenuous or completely ignorant about what was really going on over there, and of course The Red Scare became an awful lever and power-play which ruined a lot of peoples lives.
Bah, sorry for all the ranting.
Nah I welcome polite/informative ranting, makes for an interesting time on here.
I think I continue to agree with you.
Personally, I subscribe (to my own personal theory) that we haven’t really biologically “evolved” since when we were living together in small/villages as tribes — effectively communes. We did not evolve to know everything about the entire world and have the problem-solving/logistical skills necessary to feed and help more than maybe 100 people (those that should live in our commune) lol
All that to say I think living on a commune with my fam and buddies would be pretty cool, so long as no tankies are there lol.
Communism is great, on paper. In reality type b personality disorders exist and those people will corrupt any system we come up with.
I almost made my first account on Lemmygrad because I love puns and didn’t know that they were ACTUAL tankies.
Thankfully, I found out in time and made my first one on the also politically sus but in a different way .world 😄
Could have been worse, such as explodingheads, or its less funny named successor.
I made mine on lemmy.ml because my app instructed me to “choose an instance,” so I did. I didn’t know all these instances had cultures or whatever.
I’ve never tried to get an account on
.world
, what are their politics like? It’s such a big tent that there really isn’t any prevailing culture. Some people just like to shit on it because it’s the largest instance.
You’re right and you’re not: like the Democratic Party, it’s a big tent encompassing multitudes.
But also like the Democratic Party, the leadership aka mods and admins (as well as the political communities) is thoroughly dominated by Neoliberals with tendencies towards authoritarianism and prizing negative peace over justified tension.
Listen, you either slavishly devote yourself to the market system or you’re trying to run me over with a tank.
There is no middle ground, and anyone who argues otherwise is a violent extremist. 😔
Somehow, this place is still miles ahead of Reddit. The bar is that low.
Reddit isn’t close to free speech in any way. Far-right admins and owners disrupt anything but the most bland discourse, and ban people for stupid, and silly reasons.
Social media comes and goes, and reddit is fucking GONE. It became a stock traded corporation, and instantly lost all credibility. It’s just another billionaire owned media at this point.
You might as well post on full nazi x.com, then wonder why you get banned when you speak out for LGBTQ rights.
Yeah, this is better. Not perfect, but better than bluesky for the same reasons.
I don’t want you to commit suicide. I want you to be happy, educated, and productive without nazis or religious jerks bothering you for any reason.
Why do you expect free speech on a private platform?
I’m not trying to troll I’m trying to understand people’s perception of free speech.
The idea of reddit was an open platform. I guess some people just expect the rug to not get pulled from under them.
Open only until the private entity closes it. Free because they monetize your info. Social media is a cancer on society.
Both of my accounts got smacked with the permbanhammer unreasonably harshly especially considering the “offense” being that I said Neo-Nazis should be named and shamed.
Reddit admins are Nazi sympathizers and the entire platform is rotten.
I got banned a couple years ago for the same thing.
Moderators can report reports as ‘abusive’, and Reddit basically accepts their word without bothering to actually check anything.
Naturally, certain groups have been exploiting the fuck out of this situation to silence opposing viewpoints.
You could appeal the ban, but most likely Reddit won’t read it and you’ll get an automated response.
As for the repeat ban, you’re running into Reddit’s ban evasion features. They use IP address and browser fingerprinting to track you, even when logged out. Easily defeated, with a little effort - assuming you want to.
Moderators can report reports as ‘abusive’, and Reddit basically accepts their word without bothering to actually check anything.
This. They want to keep the useful idiots that are doing their bidding for free on board. Thus encouraging megalomania and overzealousness btw.
The few mods who were better than that have left long ago.
Congrats on the IP ban, those are usually reserved for serious offenders. Take it as a badge of honor, honestly.
Better get an IP ban on CG-NATed network.
