this is depression talking. don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re an objective realist when you’re incapable of feeling joy. there’s plenty to be miserable about, but if you feel miserable about everything in life and find joy in nothing that’s called anhedonia and is a genuine mental disorder.

I’ve lived this lifestyle and felt this way all the time. When I left my toxic job I stopped feeling that way. Sometimes it’s not a mental health disorder and just our shitty society.

Yes, but the point is you can always do something about it. It has a cause that you can fix.

Money problems can be solves by lowering your consumption. Medical debt can be solved by moving to a country that does care about its citizens. Awful work can be solved by starting unions or going to a different company. Even if it doesn’t do much, it is at least something.

Just doing nothing and complaining will never solve any problem.

Ugh, I hate these doomerisms. They don’t add anything to life. Just make everyone more miserable than they already are.

You CAN do stuff. You DON’T have to just sit there and take it.

As soon as I get my hands on a proper VR rig, I’m outta here for good.

      Enjoy reality, losers!

Is Finland still a utopia? I used to fantasise about moving there, but lately I’ve been hearing about wage stagnation and cost of living increases that somewhat dent the overall happiness score.

Finland never recovered from the 2008 financial crisis, and covid + the end of trade with russia has damaged the economy badly and made public debt balloon heavily. Right now unemployment is about 10%, the 2nd highest in the EU, and the far-right coalition goverment that won the last election is trying to privatize healthcare and disempower unions.

The education system has been getting worse for about the past 15-20 years due to misguided reform attempts (and of course endless budget cuts)

Finland’s birth rate dropped below replacement levels about 50 years ago and has been in freefall for about the last 10 years, and now the population pyramid is starting to be in really bad shape, which means the economic situation is likely just going to get worse and worse.

The retirement savings system is designed like a (partial) ponzi scheme due to aforementioned population dynamics, and participation is mandatory so it is effectively a hidden tax on all workers. Due to old people having the majority of the votes, it’s the one thing that is immune from budget cuts, which forces the government to sell publicly owned infrastructure and dismantle public services in a futile effort to compensate.

Not gonna lie, ever since I lost my mind for a week in 2008 I’ve been having a pretty great time. I’m one of the only people I know.
