How about the 3.75 hours essay of the causes of Mario 64 invisible walls?
That hit my timeline the other day. The amount of work that has been put into that video must have been insane.
Pannen did mention he spent the past 10 months on that video
I have that exact video paused right now. So detailed and fascinating. I love that he added moments of speedrunners hitting many of them.
The funniest speedrunner clip was definitely the one where they accidentally clipped out of bounds and died in Snowman’s Land
This comic came to mind when I was watching that video the other day. But it’s not full 4 hours, it’s about Mario 64 not Mario Kart and it’s only tangentially related to speedrunning, so in your face, last place comics!
Wait what video? I would legit watch this, very fond memories as a kid playing Deus Ex after finding it at a thrift shop for $1 the year after it came out.
Hbomberguy has a 3,5 hours one about why Deus ex human revolution is okish and the original great. So spoiler for human revolution, but if you played both it will definitely scratch that itch:
I do also love YourFavoriteSon’s 3hr20 retrospective on the whole series, Gingy’s 2h18 story breakdown of the series as well as NeverKnowBest’s 2h10 retrospective on the whole series!
(Love a good long-form video essay on videogames lol)
Warlockracy has a 2.5 hour video on the original game, and another hour long video on a fan made sequel using the original engine.
I think I’ve seen the video he’s referring to. It was good background noise for when I explored the underworld in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (took ages!)
Is this a real video?
Hbomberguy did a 3h+ video on Deus ex a couple of years ago, I think I remember it being pretty good
Not exactly 3.5 hours, but I very much recommend Ross Scott’s take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxOKEsBx4NU
No i have to watch ever youtube review of death stranding.
Y’all need to get your priorities straight.
Don’t worry, it’ll only take about 10 minutes of actual gameplay to dissuade yourself of such nonsense.
What a shame
What’s wrong with it? I think it has aged pretty well, maybe except for the shooting itself.
When did YouTube rambles become essays? I’ve seen this a few times now. Dont call them essays! Its just people talking endlessly about things they often know very little about but make it sound convincing.
Its like AI really!
A 3 hour video on a subject is, in fact, an essay. The presenter, presumably, wrote the essay, and is now reading it out to you and offering it in video or audio format.
IMO many of the longer videos, could have been way shorter, but are made longer just to make them longer
Not Harris’ stuff, he just waaaaay deep in the weeds about everything.
Then…don’t watch long format videos?
I dont but i expect its ok to express my opinion about them nonetheless
No one is stopping you.
to talk about something for even an hour requires much more than just “i like this thing”, and an analysis of why you like the thing does make the script of a video an essay. It could be a critical essay, it could be an opinion essay, but it’s an essay nonetheless
IMO YouTubers are great at spending hours explaining something that should and could have taken 10 minutes
It’s pretty clear you dont watch long form video content, most of the time they’re quite thoroughly written and well prepared. I haven’t seen long form video content that actually is just pure rambling, they’re pretty generally well structured. I don’t even watch them typically but the effort that goes into them is above just rambling lol, and you can tell they were actually written and scripted… Almost resembling an essay… How strange…
I do appreciate some 10-15 minute videos on a subject and I’d agree that they often are well planned and structured. Many of the hour long videos though, I feel could have been 10 minute videos that the creator has put effort into making longer mainly in order to make the video longer (I don’t even know if there is more money in longer videos, or its just a way of showing more ads maybe?)
I do mostly agree. Honestly, I think a lot of people just don’t know how to be concise and effective with less. You could definitely trim down in most cases. But I think extremely long form content is a different type of beast, typically made by very passionate people and made for very passionate people who also like having extreme detail in the content they’re consuming.
I see it like this: if you’re an extreme fan of deus ex, maybe you hearing someone talk for 3 hours about how good the game is and going into many details of the game is exactly what you want. You don’t watch to learn something new, but just to mutually appreciate the game
