    Hard drives are going to be one of those in between things that Gen x/millennials will understand, but were already obsolete by the time Gen z rolled around.

      I’m confused, I call both HDDs and SSDs hard drives or disks. What’s the non-obsolete term?

        HDD is hard disk drive. SSD is solid-state drive. Though I still use the term “hard drive” to refer to both of them.

        HDD mean Hard drive, SSD mean Solid State Drive;

        The joke is about HDD not being used which is wrong

        True, but most consumers aren’t doing bulk storage. Most people just have cell phone and laptop

        But, my dearest Drag, you miss the point! There will be generations of humans that have no experience of spinning rust, of whirring platters, or of the dreaded tick- tick- tick- of a crashed head and lost data. What will they do?

          How are hard drives “spinning rust”? Are solid state drives “stationary sand”?

            Magnetic recording materials have historically been metal oxides, I have no clue if that remains true for modern hard drive platters. I guess you could argue that SSDs are stationary sand, but you could make the same argumant for the majority of semiconductors so I don’t think it sufficiently specifies SSDs.

      Well, people like to say “check their hard drives” when referring to pedos, so the word itself isn’t lost yet. But there might be some other Gen Z’s who don’t actually know what that is considering we were raised with Chromebooks…

      Hi I’m technically a Zoomer, I grew up with HDDs, hybrids and 32Gb SSDs. I’m just about 30 :)
