They’re not moving into Mexico. They’re moving onto US land, displacing the civilian authorities.

He’s really digging around in the American system for elements that are explicitly loyal to him, not to the law, and trying to put them in charge. He found one in ICE. He’s trying to remake the overall federal government to be that, instead, and to some extent he’ll succeed but I think mostly he will just break it and make it a laughable dysfunctional band of idiots, instead of molding it to be the way he wants it.

I think he thinks that the military is going to be easy to mold into another instance of that, and I think there will be some small success, but I think the more likely result for most of the military is just that they’ll think it’s bullshit and it’ll motivate them to resent and resist him as his orders start to get more and more illegal. I could be wrong, but that’s what I think.

The USA military is literally the largest, most ethnically mixed, DEI enabled organization on the planet. One can spot a bunch of off duty army people by spotting how diverse they are.

The military does run conservative and they do war crimes in many countries every decade; but they, or at least huge elements of it, are going to shock many who think that military will be agreeable to being used in certain ways.

There will be some assholes and a bit of slack while things progress, then a wall of uncooperation. It will be amazing how units simply cannot move or follow orders later.

Yeah. And, they’ve all had a steady diet of “plucky outlaw nobody breaking from their orders to stand up against a tyrannical system” all through their media growing up, and then a steady diet of “your job is to protect the constitution, this is how to deal with illegal orders” all through their training. And on top of that, Trump has been doing his best to piss off the military and disrespect them at every turn.

I have no idea how it’s going to play out. But even as far back as 2020, there was a radical difference in how the National Guard was behaving at BLM protests versus the local cops. Some of the Guard people said they basically felt like their main role was to protect the protestors from the police. Their whole culture and behavior is just different even from local civilian police, let alone from the type of neo-Gestapo that Trump likes to treat with.

I think many people would be surprised at how seriously the more conservative members take that promise to defend the constitution.

I think people would be surprised how subservient and illiterate Americans are and how they when told, will bow to their great leader without giving it a second thought. Teaching national exceptionalism in school always bites you in the ass in the end. Just look at the UK.

The U.S. Military has also spent multiple decades teaching decentralized command as a doctrinal philosophy. It is very much not organized to be controlled by top-down dictatorship.

Not exactly winning the hearts and minds of the military by golfing while the bodies of service members are repatriating.

He’s not interested in winning any hearts and minds legitimately. Those are “easy come, easy go” they will desert him as soon as he does any of the bad things he has planned. They’re useless to him.

He’s trying to find the people that are fully devoted to him, mind and soul. The ones who will support him to the end, and follow his orders when he tells them to shoot at protests. The ones who will obey when he tells them to arrest the opposition. The ones who will defend him when he announces he’s not leaving the White House just because some court or election said he has to. Those are the people he’s going to spend the next 4 years shopping for, so he can put them in every position of power he can.

I agree with OP. I think he is preparing an actual coup attempt. This is how those things go. Will he succeed? I don’t know. I certainly hope not. But don’t underestimate him, or his ambitions.

His true believers fled the second shots were fired on J6 and there aren’t enough of them to form an army anyway.

But you’re right to never underestimate him.

What would be the objective? Depose current government and install a puppet…ok, but for what policy compliance? Indefinite occupation? Annexation of territory? I’m having a hard time believing any of those would be an achievable goal.

Huh, I remember Putin also stacking up the armies along the Ukraine border for no valid reason.

The gambit is that if you declare border land a “military installation”, that means troops can patrol that land and arrest migrants as “trespassers on a military base” without having to declare martial law or any of that messy “posse comitatus” stuff. Of course captives are handed off to ICE immediately and who knows what happens from there.

I wonder if that’s genuinely the plan. Martial law would be far too messy and logistically impossible. So they just send the military there to show boat for a little while then say the country is saved so Trump can go back to golfing or smth.

I wish any fascist was this willing to only show boat, don’t get confused, when they say they hate illegals and you can tell whos illegal by looking at them, they aren’t being coy, or joking, or messaging, they want us dead.

Give trump a little while. If it isn’t closed, he’ll make it hell for any non-citizen crossing it no matter what it does to each country’s economy.
