They lost me the second they announced the cast. It’s like the people making the movie never once opened up a single one of the games.
Kevin Hart as Roland is just infuriating. It shows they had no intention of treating the IP with any level of respect and they just wanted a campy action comedy with famous actors.
Exactly the same response to how they cast Roland in The Dark Tower. Apparently Roland is a cursed name now.
You mean Idris Elba isn’t good casting for a character described as a “honky mufuh” with “bombardier blue” eyes?
I like watching Idris but he ain’t no Roland Deschain.
The color of Idris Elba’s skin and eyes had absolutely fuck all to do with why that movie was fucking awful.
I could have gotten over the minor disparity because they needed a good actor, but that script was a completely butchered hack job. Anyone who made decisions on that movie should be excised from the entertainment industry.
Ha ha. The casting was the least of the movie’s issues. I like watching Elba and I think Matthew McConaughey was phenomenal casting for the Man in Black.
Wow, yeah. I love most of the actors in the cast but hard agree that not a one of them probably even know the game. Weird casting choices for sure
Bad videogame movie adaptations are back on the menu, boys!
Apparently so, I’ll admit the story in the first game wasn’t the most gripping, but if they could make a decent movie following it, then the sequel would be a guaranteed success. Instead no, they pulled characters from all over the place completely disregarding the established lore looking for a quick cash grab throwing enough star power to hopefully draw in people who didn’t play the games. Incredibly disappointing.
My whole childhood it was bad videogames made in the wake of movie/show hits. Not glad to see it goes the other way as well.
Street Fighter the movie is honestly one of the best things ever put to film. It’s just so bad and campy, it manages to circle back to ‘fucking awesome’. I can’t help but watch it when it’s on somewhere.
To a lesser degree, Alone in the Dark does the same loop but slower to get back to “fucking awesome”.
Because the casting made it clear they aren’t even trying to make a true adaptation is the games, so they aren’t courting any Borderlands fans.
And everyone else is asking why they made this trashy, lame mad Max ripoff.
And it’s not really appropriate for kids, so you can’t even use it to make little Timmy shut up for 2 hours.
And there isn’t a new game coming out (afaik) so no brand synergy.
They haven’t given a single person a single reason to watch it except ‘Kevin Hart is allegedly funny, right?’
Probably because this is the first time I’ve ever heard about it. And probably the first time most of us have heard about it. Just like you probably didn’t know they are making a BioShock movie.
Where were they announcing and advertising this? The fucking moon?
I’ve seen ads for it but the discourse is that the trailer looks so ass that nobody wants to bother with it. Not that anyone had expectations to begin with.
This has been advertised just normally and talked about (hated on) here on Lemmy and everywhere else for several months now. You surely must just have been unlucky (or lucky) to have missed all of that till now. The trailer on YouTube from 5 months ago has 14 million views with 82k dislikes and 67k likes.
I’ve seen several trailers on both YouTube and tiktok.
It looks like it has the budget of a fuckin high school play
Oh no there’s been plenty of marketing for it, it’s been all over. It’s just that everybody wrote it off the moment they saw the casting.
There’s been a couple terrible trailers. If you use an ad blocker, don’t have cable, and happened to miss the social media posts around when the trailers dropped, then there you go. Happens to me more and more these days.
Oh yeah, I always forget I have ad blockers for pretty much everything these days lol. That’s probably it then.
It does have crappy marketing though.
Doesn’t it premiere today? I just came from my local cinema and I don’t see anything about it, not even a trailer lol.
It makes sense if the studio executives knew how bad the movie was and didn’t want to throw marketing money at it. This is just another title going in to the pile of disappointments from the past few years.
Yes, I have a family friend that is a script writer and everyone knows that a film is going to bomb before release if it is bad. He’s even been brought in before to be the “writer” for an awful film that was already finished but they gave him a dump truck of money to attach his name to the sinking ship.
I’ve got an unlimited movie pass for my local cinema so I’m basically seeing it for free this Saturday.
My expectations are low; I imagine it’s going to be a poor representation of the game, just like most game movies are. I’m HOPING it’s going to be at least campy fun, but with ticket prices being what they are, I can understand most people not wanting to pre-buy tickets without seeing some reviews…
wow i can’t wait to watch a movie of one of the worst written games I’ve played. i really really hope the movie’s plot doesn’t go anywhere either! 🤞
