I started after a long period of not lifting for several years and I was very weak and out of shape. Plenty of aches all over that I got tired of.
I started with bands at home. After a month or two I switched to my dumbbells and body weight. Mostly because the bands had noticeable differences in tension. A 20 pound dumbbell is 20 pounds.
My current collection of dumbbells are pairs of 10, 20, and 30 pounds.
The first 9 months was a lot of experimenting with so so gains. One of my biggest mistakes was taking all sets to failure and often beyond. This resulted in a lot fatigue and slowed my recovery.
Protein powder made a major difference once my volume increased.
Since I lift at home with limited weight selection, I keep adding reps to my sets.
