Russian Ambassador to Brussels Denis Gonchar said that Poland’s intention to acquire its own nuclear potential could push the world to a very dangerous edge.

The diplomat noted alarming trends in some states of the North Atlantic Alliance regarding nuclear weapons. As an example, he cited the recent statement by Polish President Karol Nawroczki that the country needs a “nuclear potential of its own” as part of joint NATO programs.

Gonchar also recalled that Lithuania has recently expressed its readiness to host nuclear weapons on its territory. In addition, he mentioned the French president’s initiative to create a “nuclear umbrella” to protect the European members of the bloc, in order to reduce their dependence on the fluctuating position of the United States, as well as the intensification of risky discussions on this topic in Germany. According to the ambassador, all these steps are leading the world to a dangerous line.
