Are there any social media platforms that are not USA or China owned? Are they any good?

Specifically, I’m looking for a replacement for Facebook and Instagram for sharing information and photos with family and friend groups.

Edit: Thanks, everyone. I’ve got enough here to work something out.

There used to be. Shoutouts to Nexopia the Canadian social media before Facebook blew up.

Modern internet is heavily over-represented by USA. idk why Europe was fine with it up until recent times. Let’s see what happens.

The ones I could think of are mostly on the Fediverse. In fact I think a very large chunk of the Fediverse are non-US/China: mastodon.social is currently operated by a German non-profit, misskey.io is operated by a Japan-based group, the Mastodon server I’m registered on is owned by a Dutch guy, … I think if it is just for friends/family that are willing to switch, Fediverse might be the best option at the moment

The Fediverse (which Lemmy is part of) has frendica and pixelfed as Facebook and Instagram replacements.

I’m not sure where Frendica is based out of, but Dan Supernault of Pixelfed is Canadian.

You should use Friendica as a replacement for facebook.

I don’t really see a point in something like Instagram, considering you can just share pictures on facebook already, but Pixelfed is the logical replacement for it.

mixi might still just be owned by a Japanese company, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some US company gobbled it up. You need a Japanese phone number (or maybe phone short mail address from a Japanese carrier) to use it and no one I know has used it in many, many years, but it technically still exists.
