  • RSS is great for following blogs and sites of specific interests, like local sites, or sites about specific subjects. You get ALL the updates. For example. I live in Baltimore and have a bunch of local sites in my RSS reader.

Reddit/Lemmy, on the other hand, is a more democratically human curated and upvoted aggregator so while it hits all the popular stuff beyond the topics you follow on RSS, it will miss a lot too.

    So I use both.

Feedly for hundreds of sites of interest. And Reddit and now Lemmy for the rest.

    Good stuff!

not remotely. Both, my mastodon & my IG feed were filled with that asshats mugshot. Like… LITERALLY filled. I ended up just logging off for the night last night.

Here I subscribe to a lot of non-political & non-meme communities, so it wasn’t nearly as aggressive.

  • While I think you car analogy is flawed, maybe a bus analogy would be better?

Anyway, I think the biggest complaint is really about what the site was, what it was for, and now what he’s done to the site to destroy all of that. It’s not the first time something with a lot of users, readers, fans, etc absolutely hated when a new direction or ownership of a company ruined everything they loved about the company.

People have spent YEARS of their lives on that site. It wasn’t my main jam, easy to delete for me, but it was a source of news and what’s happening right now. But for some people, especially those with a following, it was their main voice and this dumb billionaire manbaby is just destroying it.

  • ^ this person gets it.

People are so weird about this. Yes, G’s often sound like J’s English is weird. The inventor gets to have the say, he called it “jif”, great, it’s “jif”. To say it hard g “gif” and act like all G’s sound the same is just announcing one’s own ignorance. Weird take. Welcome to English!

English is filled with weird duplicative shit. Ex: Why do we even have C’s anyway if we could use an S or a K? “Accident” one C is “kuh” and one C is “Suh”. WTF English?

  • Personally, I’m happy with both. Lemmy and Mastodon are far from perfect and both feel sorta beta, though Mastodon is further along.

Search is weak on both platforms, imo, but I expect it will improve eventually.

You mention favorite counts only being your instance, but same is true for community subscribers here.

Also landing on other instances from outside links can be confusing to find the same content in your instance (Mastodon and Lemmy).

Federation does make things more complicated. But it beats centralization.

In the end, it comes down to your personal end use and preferences.

Personally, I like Mastodon for conversations and I like Lemmy for community building - I mod [email protected] - and that works for me. 💕

(Though I’d kill for some consistent performance from Lemmy after trying to comment 3 times)
