Have you checked that all your speakers are in phase? Specifically that the positive on amp cable goes to the positive connect on on the back of the speaker?

If your system is otherwise matched especially the left/centre/right then it should function.

Depending on your surround sound amp/processor some of them can get stuck in stereo vs surround.

A quick test is here.

Verify the dialog with a well mixed movie or dvd though that adds another level of possible issues. (most appletv stuff works as expected)

Yes it’s dynamic range but the most common cause is listening to a source that’s been mixed for a centre vocal speaker.

It will play on a stereo (Left and right speakers only) but you will have very little vocals and lots of special fx.

This is also completely ignoring the us lack of lufs standards for advertising (apparent loudness.)

Not necessarily the end users fault. If the wrong audio source is selected/streamed then you are stuck. There are workarounds but no real solution

If you use real aka crunchy peanut butter rather than smooth heavily processed, the butter makes it easier to spread

Seconded. Mint with Timeshift setup. Ideally separated drive dedicated to this but you could make a partition.

With auto daily/weekly/monthly options and versioning you are pretty safe unless she has an axe.

I would also setup RustDesk so you can help if needed. But visits are nice depending on cookies and distance

If you want to do the learning and the work then unraid is a pretty sweet solution. It will be as good as your hardware and has lots of apps and decent forums.

If you don’t mind trying something different then give the GameBall trackball a go.

It has a lot of features and smarts that are controlled via the firmware within the unit (and as such doesn’t require extra software). Plenty you can do with extra software (same as any other device but it works well with generic)

Definitely needs some more testing as those numbers in the table look low to me. Archiving vs listening is a key point and storage is relatively cheap.

Listening on cheap Bluetooth headphones then you can get away with a low bitrate. If you are using better gear and/or music that has a lot of dynamic range and comes from strings (piano/classical/etc) then I would recommend 320 but your mileage may vary.

Listen, compare and decide. I have a library of about 110k tracks (musicbrainz-Picard is amazing) and I wish I had:

1. Focussed more on encoding albums rather than just songs and
2. Had 320 or flac
