  • Yep, cities are great because there’s almost always someone you can call on to get problems dealt with almost immediately. Police, fire, utilities, landlords, homeless shelters, therapists, hospitals, exterminators etc etc

In the country you simply don’t have that. Churches are basically community centers. The govt doesn’t have a huge role so country people are okay with smaller government. Cities can’t imagine life with a smaller government because they rely on it in tons of ways to keep society functioning

Many people in cities think something like owning a gun without the intent to commit a crime is insane because they can call the cops.

Many people in the country think not having a gun around for emergencies is insane because any first responder is 15-40 minutes away, and until then you and your neighbors are it

Like you said it’s not so much right vs left but city vs rural mindsets

  • Europe is relatively small but their towns are waaay more compact because they were built before cars came around so most towns are already in favor of walking/biking distances.

But yeah America is huuuge. The drive from Paris to central Switzerland is about 12 and a half hours and it’s a total change of scenery. For the US that’s just California to Utah. Or Washington DC to Charleston SC.

What the US needs badly is high speed rail from city to city

  • OSMand seems kinda clunky but it lets you do more stuff to really customize it if you want but I still find myself getting lost in the menus sometimes. But I like it for hiking/outdoorsy stuff

Organic Maps/Comaps is slick and smooth and really easy to use for most everyday stuff we’d use Google Maps for

Other people have mentioned it but one of the best things you can do is a little mapping of your local area on OpenStreetMap. Try to include the places you go to the most, or at least making notes so other know what needs added. That makes any app or service that uses it better for yourself and others around you

Airline passengers with nodes are amazing repeaters for the few minutes they are overhead. Thanks to them I’ve seen signals hop to my nodes from nearly 200 miles away

It’s crazy how fast meshtastic/lora technologies have taken off in just a few years
