  • We meet again! I’m Honduran. The Zelaya family is knee-deep in shit due to the ex-president’s brother being outed as having made deals with drug Lords, heavily implying the Zelaya family is in the drug business, which surprises absolutely nobody because that’s been their history for decades, and because we’ve been a “narco estado” for far too long. There’s no right wing or left wing bullshit here, it’s all a fight for control of a drug state. If anything, this has actually hurt the left’s appearance to the people after over a decade of not having them in the spotlight. Castro has done more to damage the left wing movement than she has done to advance it.

We voted the right wing drug lord out of the country and into extradition, you bet your ass we’ll do our best to try and do the same to the left wing drug lord.

  • First post about Honduras I see on Lemmy. I’m from Honduras. Castro is the first left-wing president since her husband was sacked in the 2009 Coup. The two elected presidents since then have all been right wing and have all been involved in drug trafficking and corruption scandals, with the last one, Juan Orlando Hernandez, having been extradited and sentenced in the US over serious drug trafficking charges. His presidency is remembered as a “narco-estado”. During this time, he got reelected, which was previously unconstitutional and which also was the foundational reason for the 2009 Coup: Castro’s Husband, Manuel Zelaya, sought to hold a referendum to rewrite parts of the constitution, with critics of his government as well as a general majority of the populace believing that he sought to write in the ability to run for reelection. He was ousted before the referendum took place. Juan Orlando achieved this by simply replacing the supreme court with his picks, and the court approved the legality of reelections during his time. A tiny little detail about the 2009 Coup: just a month before the coup, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Honduras in an official context. It is speculated by some that she gave green light on behalf of the US for the coup to occur.

All this to say, we have a bittersweet relationship with the US. I’m personally absolutely not a fan of the US, but without extradition, Juan Orlando and many of his accomplices would have remained free and immune from justice. Castro’s presidency was essentially a vote from the people to bring down justice on Juan Orlando, so we view his extradition as the best thing to have happened in this situation. Naturally, we are not reacting that well to this news now that Castro and her family might receive the same treatment as Orlando: The Zelaya family has a long history of drug trafficking, and Manuel Zelaya’s father was directly involved in a month-long massacre, eventually being convicted to 20 years for the murders alongside other perpetrators, before being released after 1 year by the National Assembly. Castro’s presidency is currently plagued by nepotism in all levels of government, chaos and disarray throughout the legislative branch as parties fight among themselves for power over congress, and recurring cries from Castro herself to follow on the footsteps of Venezuela specifically, which we all can currently see how that’s going for them.

I guess I’m just saying that there’s no right calls when it comes to Honduran governments. It’s all corruption all the way down.

  • What relevance does Linux have in this specific context? Does Linux have a marketing team? Does Linux compete on a hardware level with Apple? Is there a Linux corp we haven’t heard about that’s working with some chip manufacturer we also haven’t heard about in order to create ARM processors that can compete with Apple silicon? No? Maybe don’t shoehorn Linux into everything regardless of relevance, especially not in such a lane way.

  • I see where you’re coming from, because I kinda also hate the genres you mentioned in specific, but man, it’s not ALL bad. You put on some Juan Luis Guerra and he makes better bachata than anyone else you can think of. It’s actually fucking enjoyable. It took me decades to even begin to appreciate some of the more pop music (or even tolerate it, cause fuck regueton…but everyone listens to it where I live), and he definitely stands out.

That’s it, I just wanted to mention the 440.

  • This dude is trying to get people to think, to notice, to act, he’s trying to educate people and to help them change. Maybe don’t immediately disregard him as “not a true socialist”, maybe don’t outright jump to calling him a tankie. We’re all in this hell hole together, the least we could do is help each other out and spread the educational content, work together to give a friendly summary on our points of view, and keep moving forward.

I like his content, and I like that he’s trying, that’s my opinion on him.

Yeah if you guys put him in office again, I’m just deleting all social media including lemmy. Fuuuuuck that [most times daily, some times HOURLY] noise. I already live in a very depressing country, don’t need Americans to remind me they’re making things worse.

  • Maybe it’s a cultural or family thing? So it’s just pre-cooked rice, you cook it as you would any rice I guess, but you add chicken stock, raisins, and butter (at the end, after you’re done cooking it). Variations often also include peas and corn, maybe diced carrots, but we stick to just raisins. The savory mix of the buttery rice with tiny packets of moist raisins sprinkled about the rice makes it delicious!

  • I can appreciate that aspect of lemmy, very technical users talking about very technical approaches to left-leaning codes of ethics, such as FOSS, privacy, self-hosting, etc. In this regard, Lemmy definitely is better than reddit and I’m learning a lot about it all in here, and am beginning to apply the things I’ve learned in my own life and computer systems.

As for actually being more left leaning? Nah son, it’s the same ideas as reddit but with a sense of hatred for “reddit libruls” for not being true scotsmen. There are right leaning communities on both platforms, there for sure are more tankies over here, but almost every single moral stance found on reddit can be found here. Literally the only thing missing on reddit is such a Tech-oriented user base (which if we’re honest, you could also find on reddit but it surfaces a lot more on lemmy in general) and the russia apologists.

Maybe people over here should stop playing the no true scotsman game and actually open up their doors and take it easy on the gatekeeping. And by “here” I mostly mean the tankie instances, holding their “holier than thou” stances n shit. Chill the fuck out, act like a true left leaner and work together with the people you’re gatekeeping, get the movement going somewhere instead of armchair criticizing people for not being left-leaning enough.

  • I still use common colloquialisms without paying much mind to them. “thank God, oh my god, Jesus christ” etc. Kinda hard to get rid of those, but it’s no biggie, really.

What I will say, is that while I do identify as an atheist in the sense of not believing in established religions or cults, I do consider that I am able to believe in more than what reality presents. I’ve always said I’m an agnostic atheist, but as of late, I’ve been feeling like it’s rather OK and even necessary to wonder about reality and existence a lot more than what science allows itself to. For example, if you take even a moment to ponder about what physics and the quantum realm means about reality, you’ll feel like something else is definitely going on, like we’re obviously not seeing the full picture and there’s a good chance we never will, and that the picture were missing is unparalleled in its majesty. To just think that we seem to be just a combination of countless fields fluctuating together to form reality, but at the end of the day you could just say we’re the expression of different waves going through different mediums juxtaposed on each other. A combination of planes crashing in on each other in a multidimensional membrane, a universe that could be just one possibility out of a mostly dead multiverse, where even our universe seems to be mostly dead, yet here we stand. It’s hard to wrap your mind around it, or even begin to grasp it all. Definitely makes you feel like there’s more to it than just chance, hell, chance sounds like an implausible explanation for all of this.

I think I mostly take issue with “matter of fact” stances, where people will claim things are a specific way because their faith or textbook says so. No. Just, experience life, question it, question your beliefs, but also question life itself, don’t settle for just “big bang and chance and meaninglessness” as science is just a tool, don’t settle for just “God willed it all and demands these things of us”, we’re not here for that long, let’s ponder on it all while we can, and enjoy the life that were lucky (or unlucky) to be able to experience for one moment in eternity of nothingness, or an eternity of eternities of different existences. Who knows what were doing here, where we go from here, where do we come from? It’s ok to acknowledge that the answer to those questions is “nobody on this earth knows, and maybe we’ll never know”. Let’s cope together, let’s smile together, let’s live and ponder together.

  • Yeah I want to know as well. His content isn’t exactly my cup of tea and can feel dystopia, but my dude flies around the world giving away free surgery to people and shit, and he promotes charities and foundations and actually moves people to donate to them. His thumbnails are creepy as shit, and his content feels like it was made to be cut up into a bunch of 6 second tiktok videos, but I don’t really see a dark side here.

  • I don’t mind having less fun content, the content that’s here is good enough for me as far as scrolling a feed goes. My main problem is that every source of actually good information and good community-sourced solutions to things is still on reddit. You want to figure out why your game is acting weird? Check out for config issues that people mention on reddit. You’re trying to decide between two solutions/softwares/products? Yeah, you’re gonna get all the info you need on reddit. Tutorials, guides, recommendations, fixes, solutions, it’s all better when it’s communities talking about them, and all of that information is still over on reddit, better indexed, more condensed, the whole nine yards.

I have made ONE post on reddit since things went to shit, and it was to ask redgifs for better lemmy support. I don’t add anything to reddit otherwise, but it is still impossible to find good information without relying on reddit.
