Decentralization isn’t left wing or right wing, that’s just a moronic analysis. Decentralization has a wide appeal but unless it gets simplified and standardized it will never become adopted by the mainstream. Places like Lemmy which are littered with gatekeepers like you doom this place to forever being a niche. There are few things the developers could do. For example, they could make the platform easier to use. Many people don’t even reach this place because they’re not that tech savvy or simple don’t care enough to figure it out. It’s much easier for them to just create an account and get started on Reddit or elsewhere. This leaves extremists with nowhere else to go and tech bros… which are the two groups that dominate this place. The process of getting on board and finding instances/communities needs to be easier. There needs to be something like centralized site/app that is easily accessible and shows all the different instances and communities in one place.

Funny enough, this is the same exact reason why Reddit sucks. Those same idiots who made that platform insufferable have migrated here and made this already insufferable place even more insufferable.

Out of privacy/tech bros and far left extremists, there’s nothing else on this site. This place doesn’t appeal to the general public because there’s nothing here for them.

This is why Lemmy will never be anything more than tiny a niche platform. It’s a place for the far left by the far left. There’s nothing here in place for anybody else. This is a brain dead take because it’s just guilt by association. Having diplomatic relations with countries around the world doesn’t mean that you endorse or support their government. A country that’s ruled by a shitty ideology like Fascism or Marxism is something to be weary of, but these countries do in fact exist and they do play a role in global politics and economics. For example, the UAE and Israel normalizing relations doesn’t mean that they support each other, but they recognize each other’s influence and understand that diplomacy and cooperation is more beneficial and productive than shunning each other.

I mean we tried to sanction, shun, and ignore authoritarian countries like Cuba and North Korea for decades… How has that worked out for us? My point is that we can’t cut relations with every country we don’t like. There are situations where that should be the case and there are definitely arguments for us to be more cautious when dealing with these types of regimes, but we can’t cut ourselves off from the vast majority of the world (which is authoritarian) nor can we force countries to adopt our ways (we tried with Iraq and Afghanistan, it didn’t work).

Calling something Fascist when it is very clearly and objectively not Fascist does not actually make it Fascist. The West isn’t Fascist. The point he was trying to make is that people like you have a world of view so narrow and ignorant that you don’t understand what Fascism is, hence the incorrect usage. A country like Azerbaijan or Turkmenistan are Fascist, a country like Germany or the Netherlands are not.

See the issue here is that a lot of these Reddit activists, they start out with a good cause that a lot of people could be sympathetic towards but they end up taking it too far because they’re all terminally online extremists.

Here’s a few examples:

Veganism: A lot of people are on board with treating animals better and eating more plants, but Redditors take it too far by advocating for the complete ban of meat and the prosecution of places like homeless shelters for providing turkeys on thanksgiving because that’s genocide to them.

Cars: A lot people would agree that we should decrease dependency on cars because they’re loud, they pollute, and they’re dangerous, but Redditors take it too far by wanting to ban all cars with no exceptions even if the exception is for parents with disabled kids.

Atheism: A lot of people would consider the possibility of there being no God and that religions deserve criticism, but Redditors take it too far by wanting to force all religious people to convert to atheism… or else.

Work reform: A lot of people support the idea of having stronger work protections and better wages, but Redditors take it too far by either by being full blown tankies or by rejecting the idea of work all together, regardless of how delusional and impractical that is.

Feminism: Most people believe that women should have equal rights and treatment in society, but Redditors take it too far by being full blown misandrists who want to oppress all men and “liberate” women from them.

Not to mention how with every one of these types of communities you always have the classic “you’re either with us or against us” mentality. Every disagreement makes a you a nazi/altright/bigot, their cause is totally comparable to the struggle against nazi Germany and the holocaust, and they are totally the good guys who have the total support of the general public (especially the young people) and that they’re just a minor enemy (read: cartoon villain) away from achieving utopia.

The communities on here are just an extension of those, and they bring with them the same type of toxic idiots to this platform.
