Summary

Chinese hackers, identified as Salt Typhoon, have infiltrated U.S. telecommunications networks, intercepting phone calls and text messages by exploiting systems used for lawful wiretaps.

Senator Mark Warner called it “the worst telecom hack in our nation’s history,” with major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile affected.

The hackers gathered metadata and geolocation data on key American officials, but encrypted apps like Signal and iMessage remained secure.

Removing the hackers may require replacing outdated infrastructure, highlighting vulnerabilities in the U.S.’s fragmented telecom networks.

I wondered when that would happen. During the Clinton years congress passed a bill mandating lawful Intercept on telephone central offices. CALEA. It’s an open doorway.
