Or they’re doing this intentionally hoping that it sparks some bigger conflict, where they along with ICE ‘justify’ getting to pull out the real big boy toys to use on the populace. Considering the coordination and organization behind the “thin blue line” and my own personal experiences with police, I’m more inclined to believe this than all them suddenly growing a conscience and doing the right thing as an organization.
Looking at the difference between LAPD and cpd behavior: It’s probably because Chicago is a genuinely hard city, and the cpd know they’ll be straight up fuvking hunted if they’re seen protecting ice. Chicago has a rule. To work for the city in any capacity. You MUST live in the city. Police, fire, City Hall, public works. You live in the place you are tasked with protecting or serving. You can’t even live in the suburbs 1 block outside city limits.
This is explicitly the opposite in many other places where police are specifically not allowed to live where they police. From what I understand, it’s so that there isn’t a conflict of interest enforcing rules against neighbors.
They live there, as do their families.

It’s not by chance that all throughout History rulers violently imposing their will on the people of a place invariably bring those who will be commiting the violence from somewhere else.
Cops and their families do not live in the places they police, even when offered bonuses to do so.
This is true in a lot of places but I actually looked it up to reply the same thing and as of 2014 at least, 88% of Chicago cops live in Chicago.
