It was a decent movie, but the pacing was bad in my opinion. (No spoilers) It started off like a whirlwind across multiple people. Then settled in on a single group and then went into an overly long backstory that should have been trimmed.
Art and music were freaking amazing though.
It’s a pretty good adaptation of the original material, I’m sorry you felt that it was overly long but trimming original material when most of the fans would like to have it included feels wrong.
Its because it felt dragged out, not important to some viewers ( like myself ) and therefore it felt too long. Maybe switch it up with having it be revealed in parts or something instead of what they did.
But i get both opinions, as a fate fan i was on the other side of the fence for a while :')
And dont get me wrong, movie was good overall!
Yeah, I agree that the backstory felt force fed at once in the end. It’s a feeling I’ve had with all the final arc overall, there’s a lot of flashbacks and explanations with very little prior foreshadowing. Idk if it’s true but it feels like a lot of the final arc’s enemies’ backstory and their link to the main characters was either retconned or written right there. It’s a pity, is we were given some sort of foreshadowing for several of these “revelations” they would have felt more impactful.
I think a lot of them will become relevant in the future, with nr 1 and all that ( to try and stay spoiler free ).
I didnt read the manga though.
However, you are dead on the money with how it feels.I did try to stay spoiler free in my opinion piece above, but I have read the manga.
Spoilers for the movie: all the context on the second moon about killing Miss Bug’s sister was said in the movie for the first time, there were zero foreshadowing both in the manga and anime. (Well, anime did have some foreshadowing in the filler arc. In fact all the foreshadowing for most of the stuff exists in the filler anime arc that didn’t exist in the manga, so I guess the author also recognised it and tried to fix it somehow.)
that should have been trimmed.
Most movies like this are targeted at existing fans, who would scream bloody murder if you leave out stuff. Better to not mutilate the source material imo, we’ve already got too many ‘superfan’ directors who can’t follow a script to save their lives.
So everyone keeps saying “targeted existing fans”… I consider myself one and it still should have been trimmed. Translation from print to motion can’t always be done 1:1. Movies and video require different pacing to be successful.
Though i agree it shouldve been trimmed, i know ufotable got some backlash from trimming stuff with the fate universe so i cant blame them lol
Its a hard thing to balance in which you cant satisfy everyone hehe
I agree and so did my wife. She said the back story would straight up been an episode if air on Crunchyroll. It was damn good movie and glad we went and saw it, but it could have been better. Looking forward to them finishing this up either with more films or hopefully with an arch on Crunchyroll.
The train arc was released as a movie first and as individual episodes later (with additional scenes), maybe they’ll do the same here?
What my wife said and I agree. Seems the way to go.
Ufotable delivering insane animations as per usual, what a delightful movie. The only pacing issues I felt it had, are mirrored from the manga so it’s more of a critique of the original story, not the movie.
Both the original and the movie though
It´s never a good argument that they just had to carry the suck
That’s wild. I feel like I can’t watch it because I haven’t seen the latest season. We last watched Swordsmith Village and I think there’s a season between that and this.
I have a friend who watched it and she said it was good, but she’d never heard of Demon Slayer before, and I guess it gave her enough to go on that she wasn’t lost. Still, I’ve seen like four seasons of it so I want to see the fifth before I see the Infinity Castle movies (apparently, there will be three of them, to finish the story).
I wonder if it’s actually better than any of the top anime movies, or if it’s just riding a trend. When my favorite movie, 君の名は。 (Kimi no Na wa./your name.) came out in 2016, I would have had to drive 8 hours to see it. It was only shown in a few cities here. I heard about nerds carpooling together to go see it because they loved Shinkai’s last work that much, but I didn’t see the point. His next film, Tenki no Ko, I only had to drive 2 hours to see. Suzume, his most recent, played right where I live. So I’ve seen anime films, in less than ten years, go from playing only in a handful of cities, to only playing in major cities, to basically playing everywhere. Who can say if those other, older movies would have fared as well if more people had the option of seeing them without making a weekend adventure out of it?
My recommendation is to watch the final episode of the last season before watching the movie. I dont think that final season really had any substance to it but that final episode and movie transition directly into each other. The movie was good, but I wouldnt say its really worth going out of your way to see it unless you really like the anime. You can wait for it to come to streaming or pirate platforms.
If I recall, Infinity Castle became the #1 anime movie after surpassing the first demon slayer movie, Mugen Train at 500 million. I dont want to put anyone down for enjoying the anime, its a great anime for new watchers, but its nothing special. But thats why its breaking box office records, its an easy anime to get into and very, very newbie friendly.
You’re fine. Your post reads like a much kinder take on Demon Slayer to what people used to say about both Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online: “baby’s first anime.” Because in 2013 both of those kind of blew up.
As someone who remembers .hack//SIGN, SAO was cool for being like the next version or iteration of that. And Attack on Titan was just cool. Sure, the second season fell off a bit, but it was overall good stuff. And I liked most of SAO… minus the SA scenes. The characterisations of the girls left a bit to be desired, but the books were written by a pretty young dude in a culture where holding hands with a girl is actually taboo so… I get it? Anyway, the sci-fi stuff is what appeals to me. Specifically the time dilation introduced in the third season (and plays out a lot more in the fourth).
@cerebralhawks watch the first and the second chapters, they are the ones that are based in actual manga chapters, all the other ones are fillings. They aren’t bad for se, but don’t let that stop you from an awesome movie.
That’s exactly what I did. I watched it kinda on and off because my wife was the one actually watching and I just sat in when I could. But I watched the last 2 episodes and it prepared me enough for the movie. Obviously my wife filled me in with some minor details on some characters’ backgrounds afterwards, but I didn’t feel lost during the movie. It’s also pretty easy to follow if you don’t have a hard time remembering how characters look like (DS has same-face syndrome), because the story is largely contained to 2 battles and 5 characters only.
Would you be willing to impart any suggestions for watchable anime?
Ummm…kind of? I believe anime as a medium is a very diverse entertainment product that I cannot just tell you “go watch X”. I treat it akin to watching TV or movies, I dont know what you like so I cannot ask you to watch Lord of the Rings movie if you only really enjoy John Wick and Marvel.
Can you tell me what you like generally and maybe I can point you in a direction
Any particular genres you’re looking for? Anime is a very diverse medium, it’s like asking for readable books or listenable music.
But I’ll just say Koe no Katachi/A Silent Voice anyway.
Thats true, my b.
I tend to like action roguelike elements. I don’t care for a lot the “campy” feeling. Sword Art Online kind of blew my mind when I was ypunger.
Dorohedoro was also very cool.
I’ll check out your recommendations, thanks!
Im not sure what you mean by “campy” feeling but Im pretty sure youll enjoy “86” and possibly “Hai to Gensou no Grimgar”
Thank you much!
I’d imagine some of the movie wouldn’t hit as hard without seeing the season you missed. And it definitely spoils the biggest event of the last season right out the gate. The season you missed is kind of filler, but it spends so much time building up all the characters and showing how far they’ve come that it’s important. And the final episode is heavy. Basically the season you missed is everything right up until the big confrontation at the end of a normal season. So Infinity Castle starts right at the start of that.
I enjoyed Inifinity Castle a ton, but… it’s like they took an episode or two leading into the season ending big fight, then weaved multiple season ending big fights together, condensed it all into the best parts, and then spent like four times their normal budget for a full season on it. Don’t get me wrong, that’s fucking great, might be the best shonen anime fight scenes I’ve seen, but it isn’t some sort of movie that I’ve found myself thinking back to too much. Other than to lament that it’s going to be so long until the next one.
Just watch the last episode of the Hashira Training Arc season, and you’ll be fine.
Most of it’s filler.
Don’t expect anything too deep from the Infinity Castle movie, either. It’s mindless action, but well animated.
Quick question, but why wouldn’t you just type out the English/romanized title of either movie you mentioned?
Ah… for Kimi no Na wa., the English name is kinda dumb. I set up a text replacement to where when I type the initials of the romanised title, with the period, any Apple device I’m on will autocorrect it (via text replacement) to the actual Japanese title, because it’s cool to be able to do that. I have one set up for Tenki no Ko, but I rarely use it.
If I’m on Android, the replacement isn’t set up, so it doesn’t work. Right now I’m on my wife’s Mac desktop, so it will do it, but I’m avoiding the initials so as to not trigger it. (It can be undone.)
It’s just a “being a nerd” thing, really.
Damn that’s crazy. Time to watch Redline again
3/5 Bunch of series are better. It was enjoyable, though.
My wife said it was the worst movie she’s ever seen, even for anime. Her friend wanted to watch it (which is why they saw it at all) and they fell asleep during the movie lol.
