It was a decent movie, but the pacing was bad in my opinion. (No spoilers) It started off like a whirlwind across multiple people. Then settled in on a single group and then went into an overly long backstory that should have been trimmed.
It’s a pretty good adaptation of the original material, I’m sorry you felt that it was overly long but trimming original material when most of the fans would like to have it included feels wrong.
Its because it felt dragged out, not important to some viewers ( like myself ) and therefore it felt too long. Maybe switch it up with having it be revealed in parts or something instead of what they did.
But i get both opinions, as a fate fan i was on the other side of the fence for a while :')
Yeah, I agree that the backstory felt force fed at once in the end. It’s a feeling I’ve had with all the final arc overall, there’s a lot of flashbacks and explanations with very little prior foreshadowing. Idk if it’s true but it feels like a lot of the final arc’s enemies’ backstory and their link to the main characters was either retconned or written right there. It’s a pity, is we were given some sort of foreshadowing for several of these “revelations” they would have felt more impactful.
I think a lot of them will become relevant in the future, with nr 1 and all that ( to try and stay spoiler free ).
I didnt read the manga though.
However, you are dead on the money with how it feels.
I did try to stay spoiler free in my opinion piece above, but I have read the manga.
Spoilers for the movie: all the context on the second moon about killing Miss Bug’s sister was said in the movie for the first time, there were zero foreshadowing both in the manga and anime. (Well, anime did have some foreshadowing in the filler arc. In fact all the foreshadowing for most of the stuff exists in the filler anime arc that didn’t exist in the manga, so I guess the author also recognised it and tried to fix it somehow.)
Most movies like this are targeted at existing fans, who would scream bloody murder if you leave out stuff. Better to not mutilate the source material imo, we’ve already got too many ‘superfan’ directors who can’t follow a script to save their lives.
So everyone keeps saying “targeted existing fans”… I consider myself one and it still should have been trimmed. Translation from print to motion can’t always be done 1:1. Movies and video require different pacing to be successful.
Though i agree it shouldve been trimmed, i know ufotable got some backlash from trimming stuff with the fate universe so i cant blame them lol
Its a hard thing to balance in which you cant satisfy everyone hehe
I agree and so did my wife. She said the back story would straight up been an episode if air on Crunchyroll. It was damn good movie and glad we went and saw it, but it could have been better. Looking forward to them finishing this up either with more films or hopefully with an arch on Crunchyroll.

Art and music were freaking amazing though.

The train arc was released as a movie first and as individual episodes later (with additional scenes), maybe they’ll do the same here?
What my wife said and I agree. Seems the way to go.
