Well they’re not cops. They’re not army. They’re typically deployed in natural disasters or for superbowl-type-crowd control. They have regular 9-5 jobs and go to training once a month or something like that.
When Gee Dubz sent them to Iraq to fight, that was a huge overreach of what the NG is for - and just another in the very long line of outrageous republiQan idiocies that ended up here.
Nah going to Iraq and Afghanistan is part of what the Guard is for. They’re a component of the US Army that is normally controlled by the states, that’s what allows them to be used by state governors for disaster relief. Active component is federally controlled, full time soldiers. Reserves is federally controlled part time soldiers. The National Guard is state and federally controlled part time soldiers.
“National Guard units can be mobilized for federal active duty to supplement regular armed forces during times of war”
Inasmuch as Iraq II was “a war”, yeah. But it wasn’t. Nobody even knows wtf it actually was today other than a trillion dollar misadventure. Unless you subscribe to the “they stole time machine parts out of the Iraqi museum” or similar goofy theories.
They are paid by a nation state and have the authority to kill. so. yeah. they’re the same as every other layer even if they mostly do the bitch work locally.
I have experience with plenty of natl guard folk who have wished to deploy to see “the shit” and yet never have so they have become cops and roam cities pretending the locals are guilty before they are innocent. Calling in ICE, jumping for tazers, not focused on community or deescalating.
No. it’s not hyperbole. I can think of at least three people, right now.

It wasn’t a time machine, it was a Stargate.
Right, right.
