why has two different meanings. You can ask “why did something happen” and expect a causal explanation, i.e. event B happened because event A happened earlier, or you can ask it like “why is this happening”, like “what is the purpose in it”. does that make sense to you?
the more different characters you try, the more experience you gain in life, so keep trying.
you can compare some people to a good cognac, the longer it matures the more taste it develops …
The race is long
and in the end is death. don’t race your life to “get ahead”. Take as much time as you desire.
Clean and decorate your home. Develop a sense of style. Go out and do things and meet people. Challenge yourself to do something interesting every week. Talk to people, get out of your shell.
literally every single one of these things are things that i don’t like
I just want to add to my description above that the cost of living is actually decreasing if you looked at it from an objective perspective. However, we are humans and don’t look at things from an objective perspective, but from a subjective one instead, i.e. how much can i buy with my money.
And that is becoming less. Because the wages decrease faster and more dramatically than the cost of various products. As a consequence, if you divide the cost of products by our wages, things still seem to get more expensive in relation to our own buying power.
I made this diagram a while ago:
Basically, human labor is required to make the economy grow, but to sustain it doesn’t need so much labor.
That’s like when you’re building a house, a lot of working hours goes into building it (10 men for 1000 hours each), but sustaining it can be done by a housewife in her spare time after she took care of children all day. (I’m deeply sorry about the gendered language but i feel it gets the point across more clearly - maintenance requires significantly less work than building something in the first place.)
This leads to the following phenomenon:
As time goes forward, we have more resources available due to better automation (consider farming robots) but at the same time there’s less demand for human labor also due to automation.
This changes the way that society operates significantly. And it also makes it very displeasant for the people who only identify through the labor they produce to have children, because these children will have a difficult time finding meaningful employment.
Note that this phenomenon takes decades to roll out, but that’s also the time in which children would grow up, so it matches on the timescale and that’s why it’s relevant.
I imagine that women “feel” the future and while there might not be crisis in nordic countries today, there might be in the coming decades. Our world is changing so rapidly, and humans live for 80 years; can you really say confidently that no major changing in living conditions to the negative are going to happen within your potential child’s lifetime?
it’s a play with conditional probability:
By asking the question (of whether the universe exists), that is already reason enough to know the answer. As such, you could say that asking the question is causal to knowing the answer. And the answer is that the universe exists.
So, asking questions causes the universe to exist, in some sense.
there’s a few essential differences between animals and plants, and one of them is that plants try to maximize their surface area to collect more sunlight, while animals try to minimize their surface area because surface area is attack area.
as a consequence, animals are kinda sphere-shaped, or at least they center all their body relatively closely to some center point. I.e. humans have 2 m diameter max, from tip to toe, while plants can easily have roots that stretch for kilometers.
i assume that robots are much closer to animals than plants, and as such, they have a rather narrowly centered body, and as such, that center point automatically gains a lot of significance. So, it is quite likely that robots would have an “i” awareness similarly to how a sphere is clearly distinct from everything around it.
What else do you need for an “i” awareness? I mean, “i am a particle in space” is pretty dependent on the thought of being at a well-defined position in space, which is only possible if your body is relatively compact.
I mean, have you considered that the expansion of the universe generates or increases the total energy in the universe?
As stars move apart, they gain both potential energy with respect to other stars, because greater distance from gravity sources means greater potential energy, but they also gain kinetic energy as they accelerate away from other objects. So, their mechanical energy (potential + kinetic energy) increases over time. Maybe somebody could build a clever machine out of this to harvest that energy?
Not having consciousness might be the best thing that could happen to a universe. Just everything existing, without desire or suffering.
With a universe that peaceful, there might as well not be us.
actually that’s precisely what buddhism is all about. there is no “i” in it all, the universe is a river of colors, flowing, transforming, but it is because we cling to the world that we create the illusion of an “i” ourselves.
There’s a cool video about this by exurb1a, i think it’s this one (but could also be another video, this dude made a lot of great videos.)
I’ve heard a funny story somewhere that god created the humans sothat they are worshipped. Because if nobody believes in them, they might as well not exist.
If the universe wouldn’t exist, you couldn’t ask yourself that question. So, by wondering “why is there anything at all” you have already answered the question: because otherwise you couldn’t even ask the question.
IMO circumcision is genital mutilation and that’s always wrong in general. In the very few cases where it actually has health benefits you can still do it later in life, it’s not a big problem. You’re not missing out on anything if you don’t do it.
that series was great!
American Dragon vibes kinda, i’d say
well i haven’t
