  • The point of 2FA isn’t that if your password is weak it saves you. The point is if your password gets leaked somehow (you accidentally enter it on a fake site, the site gets compromised, someone looks over your shoulder), they still can’t enter without the 2FA. I hate SMS 2FA (it’s not even secure) and sites that make you go through 3 steps for some reason, but the 6 digit code ones really aren’t that big of a deal, you just whip out your phone and open an app.

  • The thing is you’re distributing that time onto a lot of people. Instead of a person having to sit at the register 24/7 now people spend 1 minute longer at the store because they have to scan stuff themselves, which is negligible. In fact, you’re (or at least I am) almost always faster at shopping because now you don’t need to wait for a register to open up. Now you have an entire human being that’s free to do something else.

Another important fact is that for me at least the difference between when a cashier checks out goods for me and when I do it is maybe 30%, which again doesn’t count the fact that you don’t have to wait for a free cash register or the wait is much shorter most of the time.

Another thing it helps with is when you have a grandma fidling with her coins trying to find exact change for 5 minutes blocking everyone behind her. You can just go to a different self checkout instead of waiting for the single open till to free up.

Protecting jobs is the stupidest possible reason to be anti self checkout. I don’t care much about the other points but that one I find really stupid. I guess we should also remove all automation from manufacturing and use hammers and nails to build cars as well. Let’s also destroy all calculators since we can just go back to people crunching out numbers on paper.

Look at all these poor women that lost their jobs because of big calculator.

Yeah but my point was moreso that there are more important things to focus on that are probably easier to do. I mean, reducing shipping by just the fact you don’t need to ship oil anymore is pretty nice, it’s free reduced emissions, I’m just saying that it’s not that big of a deal. It is a nice plus however.

  • Well I personally need my laptop for collage as well. And it comes in handy if it has a powerful GPU if I need to do anything more intensive on it (e.g. machine learning or game dev). Steam Deck wouldn’t really be adequate there. And even if it wasn’t for my usecase (which isn’t representative of every student), most students will probably still need a laptop to bring with themselves sometimes to collage, and if they also want to game, makes sense to buy a gaming laptop instead of a gaming PC + a regular laptop.

  • When I get a job and settle down, I definitely plan on getting a PC. It just has so much more bang for the buck, and you can actually use the entire performance. My laptop basically overheats immediately if there’s an intense load on it, even though it has the raw power to actually run it. But the reality is that currently, as a student, a gaming laptop is a lot more practical to me.

To add to that, apart from the Apple cloud processing, data can be sent to OpenAI if a prompt is deemed too complex, but even then you’re asked whether or not you want it to talk to OpenAI’s servers each time, and apparently OpenAI isn’t allowed to store any of that data, tho idk how much I’d trust that part.

They also claim that whenever data is sent off device, only the data directly relevant to the prompt is sent.
