  • So many nice recommendations here but here are some of my recommendations in genres (in top 5 form). All of them have PC ports (but not all of the series may be available on PC)

    Platformers:

    1. Rayman
    2. Sonic
    3. Wonder boy
    4. Shantae
    5. Trine

    RPGs

    1. Final Fantasy
    2. Tales of Series
    3. Star Ocean
    4. Elder Scrolls
    5. Pathfinder

    Some noteworthy mentions for RPGs

    1. YS
    2. Mana

    Shooters:

    1. Medal of Honor
    2. Shadow Warrior
    3. Doom
    4. Call of Duty
    5. Wolfenstein

Puzzles, point and click: Note: This was very hard to list since most of them are standalone and those that are not have interesting plot lines that you will not appreciate unless you play in order such as Syberia, Gabriel Knight, Secret Files. Walking Dead)

    1. Myst (You can play in any order but it would be nice to play the sequels or prequels)
    2. Broken Sword (Don’t touch 4 and 5 but you can play in any order and it would be nice to play the sequels or prequels)
    3. Life is Strange (1 and 2 are standalone stories)
    4. of Loathing series (It has turned based combat but very fun)
    5. Nancy Drew

I would say I prefer them in the chronological order of their release date. Some of the series I have listed completely have either loosely, small references or completely standalone only sharing a “franchise name”

  • Risk of Rain 2 and Robo Quest are probably up your ally because you like Ultra kill

But if you want to diversify genre, here are some that I would recommend

    • Card Games - Slay the Spire (Its like a card game and rogue like combined)
    • Rogue Like - Hades is currently one of the top tiers in rogue like dungeon crawler
    • RPG - Baldurs Gate 3, even if you end up finishing the game, how you ended up finishing it is what makes it so replayable. Each character has their own stories for you to uncover. Larian’s other gem is Divinity Original Sin 2 too
    • Sandbox Games - Minecraft of Terraria
    • Arcade - Most arcade games are highly replayable because thats their whole selling point. Currently I am back to playing Temptest 4000
    • Hack n Slash - Grimdawn, nuff said

  • Most modern AAA games sucks. Mainly because majority of them have started to go with the online only bullcrap when it is not even necessary. Not to mention that trend too where games are sold half baked with the rest of the game being delivered later as separate to purchase DLC(s).

I have already embraced Indies. Fun fact: Baldurs Gate 3 is an indie game (although the quality is very much an AAA game and also some argueably saying it is not because Larian is a large private company that independently publishes their games)

  • Two reasons.

    One is the form factor.

While certainly my ROG phone plus gamesir is enough to even emulate this gen’s handheld games. It cannot beat playing a gba game on an Anbernic rg35xxsp.

Second is that some owns a low tier or a very old phone and they don’t want to throw it away because it still works perfectly fine.

So instead of spending 300 bucks for a decent mid tier phone replacement, plus accessories, spending 99 bucks is far more cost effecent.

Then there is that storage issue. Some newer phones today no longer have an sd card slot for expandable storage.

Plus some if not all of these handhelds are moddable as fuck too.

  • I wouldn’t say it breaks everything. Franky it fixes / handles better issues that are common usecases today that was not the case during the time X11 was still the norm / actively maintained such as:

    • Multiple monitor support with varied refresh rates
    • Hybrid GPU setup (including being able to use your motherboard’s hdmi socket and your dedicated gpu hdmi at the same time)
    • Display scaling
    • Better isolation of applications (to the deterrence of existing linux applications)

Of course granted its a new protocol, it doesn’t support all the usecases that X11 was designed for due to variety or reasons (including controversial decisions)

Mind you, Wayland isn’t perfect either. For example, I found out that despite Wayland having better Hybrid GPU setup support out of the box, there are applications that ended up having broken multi-gpu support (where the application in question can choose which gpu it would utilize for its processing) where it works fine X11.

With the state of the hardware we are having, it is understandable why distros have been focused on pushing Wayland as the default, although honestly, it would be wise for these distros to not completely phase out x11 because currently, Wayland isn’t perfect.
