I’ve used Linux for 15+ years.

Install from the repositories, if it isn’t in your “app store” or installed using apt or yum or whatever your distro package manager is, don’t bother with it until you’re more familiar with Linux.

Your system is 99%+ of the time going to be secure as long as you don’t install something sketch. You need to install it, it won’t just happen on it’s own, things can be hidden behind copy paste instructions so be sure you have a good idea of what each step does if you’re doing that (I’ve never come across this in the wild, FYI). The other small percentage is a bug or something in packages (see the xz debacle) which you have little control over. The best thing you can do is just keep packages up to date.

I keep tabs open until I’m done with them or am setting those ideas aside. I’ll keep them around longer if it was hard for me to find, otherwise I trust that I’ll be able to find the information again. We were unaffiliated with the department of safety (cops), they have no business being in our building unless it’s to drop off samples or for training. Cases are usually handled by prosecutors by that point, so if any defense lawyer got word that a cop was in there harassing us about results that would be highly unusual and they’d have a pretty strong case for tossing it due to tampering.

Check if there’s alternatives to what you use in Windows, or if there’s a Linux version. Decide if you need to use the windows program, or if the Linux equivalent will work. There may be a learning curve to using a different program, but I haven’t yet really found anything that doesn’t have an equivalent that isn’t a program paired with hardware that will only work with each other.

If you give me all of YouTube and that includes everyone maintaining it, all the data collection processes from it, and the infrastructure to keep it running. Hell yeah I’ll take it, the data collection alone on users is an information gold mine and companies all over would be salivating to get a piece of that. I can pretty much guarantee that if given the threat of losing the data of everyone in the worlds video watching habits vs paying more to upkeep it, companies will start paying more.

In all actuality, I’d still do it and toss out the data collection. I don’t see anywhere in this mental exercise that I have to keep it running well. Y’all (well, about 5 of y’all at a time) are watching 36p videos from here on out.

Quality movies and shows, HBO was the place for that for decades. If you saw HBO and static, you knew you were in for something good.

If I recall correctly it was in response to a bill that would nullify the treaty with the indigenous people. I would wonder if there’s a self hosted option out there for video streaming (there’s this?) that you could set up to mirror with a few friends, that way if your home every gets searched you’ve got a friend with copies that can get it to a journalist/lawyer

Lora is in the 915mhz ISM band in the USA. This part of the spectrum is full of high power transmissions, Lora runs on such low power that it’s signals are pretty much below the noise floor. The FCC doesn’t have the teeth to regulate what they already are supposed to regulate, they aren’t going to bother with Lora. As far as communicating doing anything illegal or soon to be illegal shit, Signal is more reliable.

That app has been junk for several years. I think there was a change in permissions in one of the Android versions that made it useless, they never updated it.

I agree with their sentiment, I like my menu on the side, the middle of my screen is busy showing me what I was doing. I don’t want it covered up because I opened the start menu.

I’m the minority in my family I suppose, because the kid doesn’t know better and can barely tell the difference between raspberry pi OS and Windows and the wife “kinda likes it in the middle”. I’m also the only one who uses Linux. I feel dirty if I ever have to do something on their computers. I keep a liveUSB of opensuse tumbleweed to minimize my interactions with Windows at home.

I was a manager at our student union building in college, very occasionally I had to go to the back of the food court since I had the magic keys and all. The shear amount of oil coating the floor after mopping in the Sonic area made me never want fast food again. I had non slip shoes and it was still like walking on ice.

Raspberry Pies (is that how you pluralize it?), and especially their SD cards are not the most reliable pieces of hardware. I’ve already had a few die on me.

I grabbed a le potato with an emmc module a little while back and recently got a rock 3c with an emmc slot. I doubt think I can ever go back to microSD based SBCs. I have a good handful of pis from the first one to the 4. Each one of those has chewed up at least one card until I made a point to buy high quality microsds. They do work quite well if you don’t have them reading and writing from the card much, so if it’s just running as an appliance it should be able to last a while.

But yeah, I regularly dd my sd cards so I have a backup of a clean setup and a more recent one that I can revert to if I lose a card. Which reminds me, I should probably do that with my pihole, since it’s somehow become that one brick keeping my entire network functioning.

That’s actually a future project for me. I’ve got plenty of self hosted things going on, so adding one more just adds to the fun. Unfortunately, a lot of the upgrades to my house were done late 80s/early 90s and things I’ve done the last five years or so. So there’s an ungodly number of incompatible light fixtures in this house. Damn led fixtures that you can’t replace the light, halogen sconces, florescent tubes, and my favorite, the asshole fixture that has these fittings that currently hosts two 100000k temperature, bright as fuck, lights that I want to die, but not enough to be the fifth fixture I replace in this house.

My step kid literally turned on the kitchen, dining, hallway, and bathroom light after I went to bed and left them on. Cue grumpy ass me turning off lights after my late night pee. The hallway light alone is enough to light up every single one of those rooms for grabbing whatever you need before bed, the switch is five feet from their bedroom and I have a switch in my bedroom for it as well. So of course that couldn’t be the only light left on. Rant over
