E. coli levels should stay at or below 900 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters for “sufficient” water quality, according to World Triathlon. Only 1 of 4 test sites along the Seine showed levels below that limit, AP reports.
Training events had already been postponed with elevated bacteria levels following the downpour over the opening ceremony. Heavy rain can overwhelm sewage and wastewater systems, allowing untreated water to reach the river.
There’s more rain in the forecast for Paris tonight. But for now, both the women’s and the men’s triathlon events are scheduled for Wednesday at 8AM and 10:45AM local time, respectively. There’s also a backup date of August 2nd.
Seems to be pretty shitty odds of this happening on Wednesday
Even if they did clear it up by then I wouldn’t want to swim in it. That’s like swimming in the toilet right after you flushed it. There is still probably residue or something. Gross lol
It’s a river though, it’s never going to be all that clean. Yea they should wait till it follows to regulation required levels but expecting it to be anything near clean is unreasonable
Unreasonable if not done in time. Paris still has century old sewage pipes running to the river. That could have been solved but it needs years.
Meanwhile in Portugal after investments in water treatment plants all along the Tagus you are starting to see dolphins show up on the river near Lisbon.
Need years? I’m pretty sure Paris had almost 10 years to figure it out. The Olympics don’t just pop up a year or 2 out.
All I can think of is #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin. Still impressed someone created a site to coordinate all of it arriving together.
do they have privatised water companies like we do in the UK?
More like they have an ancient sewage system.
Basically, if the sewer system gets overwhelmed, for instance if there is a large amount of rainfall in a short time, then the sewage overflows directly into the Seine.
They have built infrastructure leading up to the Olympics to capture this overflow in storage tanks, but you cannot build infinitely large storage tanks so at some point it will still overflow. And 2024 has been a very wet year thusfar, so…
That’s the same as the UK sewage systems.
Who would have thought that a city with infrastructure from before the Industrial Revolution would have infrastructure problems.
But when they said this WASN’T the case before the games started, did that not change reality to match?EDIT: I stand correctedIt rained. They did specifically call out that if there was enough rain it would basically ruin this whole thing anyways. They got something like 2/3 weeks worth of rain in a single day over the weekend.
