So…after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch…I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series…was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?
Thanks!
On the big wall of TVs at Cyberdelia, the nightclub from Hackers.
I just play BallisticNG because it has the best features from all wipeout and f zero games combined.
I would say the definitive PS1 Wipeout game is Wip3out: Special Edition.
Specifically the special edition as it comes with double the number of tracks where the best of the previous two games are selected for the bonus content.
Also the wipeout 3 soundtrack is absolute perfection.
As for how to play, retroarch is probably the recommended approach these days, PS1 emulation is pretty mature and has been for a while.
Just FYI: if you’re gonna use a PS1 emulator, use Duckstation. It’s phenomenal.
Everyone sleeping on WipeOut 64, SMH my head
The collection on PS4 picks up the work from the fantastic Wipeout HD and Fury and adds the Vita game on the same package. It even has full VR support.
Can these be decently emulated on PC? I guess not on Deck.
Original wipeout? Phantom HD Edition.
Wipeout Omega Collection for PS4 includes HD+Fury+2049 (all of the content from PS3 and Vita), and a lot of the PSP content had made its way into HD+Fury iirc.
For everything else, your options are emulator or tracks/ships ported over to BallisticNG. IMO you can just play BallisticNG as is though, it’s an amazing game.
The PSP ones are good too and a bit more modern, they run great in ppsspp
I found these some time ago:

But I haven’t tried them myself. Might be worth a try.
If you ask me, get a PSVR set up and play it that way. You might need a strong stomach, but it’s amazing.
Thanks…I meant for a gaming computer (or a Steam Deck). And without having to buy additional equipment…if possible.
I figured you meant something like that, but if you’re the kind of person who has cravings for Wipeout and you haven’t played it in VR, it’s something you should aspire to.
That said, I would probably look into emulating the highest possible system, which would be PS3 or maybe fall back to PS2 for a higher framerate. Looks like someone did some testing for you up to PS2 though: https://youtu.be/zlVWdk4i-1Q?feature=shared
Isn’t the ps4 version a collective remake of all the previous games?
