Examples: If you won a car, did you get a car without a hitch? Any help on insurance payments? Not the prize or cash you were promised?

When I was a kid I won a trip for 4 people to Washington DC (plane and hotel) plus $500 spending money for the trip from entering a contest I found on the back of a Cheerios box. It was a mail-in entry and I had entirely forgotten about it but weeks later I got a letter saying I won. My parents had no idea I entered and thought it was junk mail at first but were super excited when they realized it was real. Everything went smoothly and we got a fantastic family trip and memory out of it.

I was on Nickelodeon game show Get the Picture back in the early 90s. I was 12. I won $500 and a bike. I had to pay taxes in both (nearly half their total worth), and the bike was trash. I already had a much better one. I donated it to recoup the loss.

This was season 2. Season 1 had better prizes, and my friend, who was also on (they scouted our school) got a much better haul.

I’m not sure if that show had it or not, did you get slimed? My ultimate goal in childhood was to get nickelodeon slimed.

I won a radio contest for free season tickets and a press pass for the Raiders. It was cool as hell. The only whack part was having to pay taxes on the value of the tickets as income, but I got to do a lot of cool stuff.

I got to meet Ice cube, most of Green Day, and a number of then current/ former players. I’ve always wondered if I was somehow related to Tebow mania being a thing. I was sitting in the press box next to someone who said he worked with the Broncos. We started discussing Tebow, and how bad he was. I told him something along the lines of “Tebow can’t throw to save his life. Idk why they don’t try to run the option with him. It worked in college, and it can’t get any worse than what we’re seeing.” The 1st half , the raiders were up big. The 2nd half Denver runs almost exclusively option plays, and came back to win. They continued to do so the rest of the season and turned their season around/ got into the playoffs. It could have been a complete coincidence, but I always wondered if that guy had any say, or talked to someone who did about it.

I got to network my way into an internship with the team the next year. I tried to make a career of it. That didn’t work out, but it was a helluva life experience. Wouldn’t have traded it for the world.

You probably dodged a bullet by not making a career out of it. I know a couple people who are genuinely passionate about sports (which it sounds like you are) and tried careers in sports business. They didn’t last more than a couple years because they found out how soulless the business side of it is (especially in the NFL) and couldn’t stand to be a part of the decisions that raised prices to what they are today.

My father won an equivalent of $40 000 here in Poland which was a hefty sum in 1999, it opened some perspectives for us, we renovated our communist-built flat (bye bye wooden windows), my sister got married with her boyfriend, parents bought them a flat (for silly money, inflation is a removed), paid for a moderate wedding, I got a PC (shitty for that times) and my father bought a car, he had a minor cardiac arrest a year later, he couldn’t keep his job with his condition, so he became jobless, money was spent, my education fund was spent, fast forward few years later long story short I got married, had to pay for my wedding by myself, living at my wife’s parents

I won a trip to the Marlboro Ranch in Montana. They paid for myself and another person to fly to a ranch in Montana, bought our meals, drinks, a bunch of gear (think outdoors gear, tents, backpacks, water bottles, etc) and a ton of other things. I also received a check for $600 for use on taxes.

I won a free LASIK in a contest from the local newspaper. The surgeon’s practice office manager tried to claim that the prize was a free single eye (effectively buy one get one free) but the way the contest prize statement was phrased made it very clear that it was both. We mutually decided to cash-value the prize at 0.75 because I decided there’s no way I want a pissed-off surgeon pointing a laser at my eyes. In exchange, I signed a 5 year NDA about the whole thing—that was about 7 years ago.

Used the cash for a down payment on an awesome car, instead. That’s my story on how I got my Tesla. The company’s frontman is a massive douche but the car is freaking awesome.

My mom was on our state’s lottery game show and won a jeep. She didn’t take the jeep but instead took the cash value, $18,000 (this was in the 80’s). No problem getting paid but income taxes were due on it.
