minus-squarejoyjoy@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up29arrow-down6·1 year agoIt wasn’t a failed rape bid. It was a failed rape attempt. There wasn’t an auction like I was thinking based on what I read in the title.
minus-squareCopernican@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up48·1 year agoJust non native English speaking translation. A bid can meet an attempt, like a bid for re election.
minus-squaretiramichu@lemm.eelinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up8·1 year agoOne of the meanings of ‘bid’ is to attempt to achieve something e.g. “In a bid to escape, he jumped down the waterfall” Doesn’t mean money is involved. But I agree it’s a poor choice of phrase for this headline. And either way, very bad news =(
minus-squarea baby duck@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up7arrow-down1·1 year agoYeah I’m not sure what “rape bid” is even supposed to mean, in any context. Doesn’t “bid” imply something that can be accepted?
minus-squaretsonfeir@lemm.eelinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up2·1 year agoI think it’s more of a translation issue.
