I recently started playing Ōkami (HD on the Switch) for the first time because I’ve always heard great things about it and a sequel is in the works. I just beat the 8-headed dragon, which I’m guessing is the halfway point of the game.
I really want to like this game because the art style and general vibe of the game are so cool, but the other elements of the game just feel a bit… lacking.
The combat is very easy and I haven’t needed to use any of the powerup items for assistance. Really, the only difficulty comes from the celestial brush not properly recognizing what I drew.
The puzzles are super simple and often rely on the same celestial brush-based mechanics repeated ad nauseam.
Does the game get better and should I keep playing? Or is it just gonna be more of the same with a few added brush techniques (I see I have 4 more to unlock in the pause menu)? I always try to give highly regarded games a fair chance, but the fact that I already feel like I’m just going through the motions this early in the game is concerning. Idk, I’m a huge Zelda fan and I feel like they tried to copy the Zelda formula but fell short of making the puzzles engaging and giving the brush techniques more than one purpose.
I love that game, but if you are not enjoying it at that point I am not sure I can see it getting better for you for the rest of it.
Though if you just beat Orochi, that’s more like a quarter of the game if memory serves. Ōkami is quite longer than your classic Legend of Zelda game, I’d say for me it took a bit more than twice as long to complete the first time compared to, say, Twilight Princess.
Its story is more like a series of legends rather than a unified storyline, which didn’t bother me since it fits the mythology theme.
I had the same reaction. Never played it as a kid but tried it as an adult and it didn’t click.
I also had a similar reaction. I bought it when it came out on the wii, but quickly sold it because I couldn’t get into it. I kept hearing how amazing it was over the years, so I bought it again for very cheap a couple of years ago. I finished it the second time around mostly because I had now paid twice for it. The artwork and world are amazing, but the gameplay was underwhelming for me. I do own one figure, because I like the artwork.

I thought Okami (currently playing the PS2 version) was great, I really liked the story as well as the art. I like a lot of the puzzles, some of them are quite clever, but there are a few that are more annoying than anything (see rolling the little rock to the correct place, that drove me nuts). I like how the celestial brush can be used for both the puzzles and the combat, but I do agree that it gets repetitive over time. I just beat the dragon myself so I can’t comment on the later parts of the game unfortunately.
Idk I played it as a child and it felt like Japanese pupper Legend of Zelda. So I would keep in mind this game was not made for adults but children. I didnt find too much challenge, not even in the Orochi fight. But I enjoyed the story enough where it was worth it to play it until completion.
I can’t remember the specifics because it’s been a few years but I do remember enjoying the second half a bit more.
