Mainly because this gives them direct power over people: they can indoctrinate and control poor people when the threat is starvation and homelessness.

I think it’s more like they want to decide who’s deserving of charity.
I personally support bringing the r word back but am vehemently opposed to literally everything conservatives stand for.
