It isn’t underrated by any stretch of the imagination. It is an utter bore of a movie that just isn’t worth watching.
Yes how Kubrick captured the natural lighting makes for a neato liner note, but the end result really isn’t that remarkable nor does it make it worth sitting through the movie.
In the ten year stretch between A Clockwork Orange and The Shining you get Barry Lindon.
I remember this movie looked really great. I think he did some interesting things with lenses to capture candle light. Honestly though I thought it was pretty boring. If you want “off-the-beaten-path” Kubrick check out The Killing
I didn’t know people considered this a lesser work but I can definitely see why. Lol at calling it a three hour slideshow for art history majors though. I’ll catch it on the big screen of if it comes around me.
