Today’s game is some more Mario Kart World. I think i’ve changed my opinion on this, because fuck. After playing through all the Grand Prix and just fucking around in the Open World, i think this might just be tied for my favorite Mario Kart. It has it’s flaws definitely and i don’t think it’s the console pusher nintendo thinks it is. Namely the price tag is too high, the Open World has a lack of content in some places i feel like (and a lack of splitscreen multiplayer), and i think it’s definitely a little to complex to be a “family game” if that makes sense (my siblings asked me to play with them and they struggled to grasp anything outside of the basic "Here’s course 1, here’s course 2). But damn, did i have fun after finally being able to get a night’s rest and play it.
The open world, despite the flaws, is so much fun to dick around in. I spent a good hour just driving around crashing into shit and messing with the photo mode. Namely with Waluigi, something about the way he strikes his poses is hilarious to me.
Crown City has got to be one of my favorite courses, among the one that looks like Venice and good ol’ DK Pass. I just like driving around in it, it’s got some vibes i love and has the highest numbers of cars for me to crash into.
Rainbow Road Spoilers
The rainbow road in this game i think ties with 64 for my favorite. I think it takes bits and pieces of all the other rainbow roads to form this awesome nostalgia trip of a rainbow road (though the rest of the game does this too). It has my favorite trait from the 64 one too of being freakishly long. It’s like a marathon at the very end and i love it.
There’s this section with this Star water that i fucking love. I don’t know if this was taken from another Mario Kart, but it’s amazing. It’s one of the most iconic parts of the track for me. I want to swim in it. It’s beautiful.
My one complaint about this is that it’s not available in Free Roam. Honestly though, i’m a bit mixed on it. It in a way to me makes it feel a bit special how you can only race on it, but also it makes Free Roam feel a little half baked too. Especially combined with the lack of Splitscreen Multiplayer.
Overall, i think this game just needed some time to grow on me. And i’m glad i didn’t just brush it off as “It’s Mario Kart again” like i initially did. It was a blast playing through it, and despite seeing most of what it has to offer in well under 10 hours, i don’t want to move on yet. It’s exciting.
I can’t wait to play this on my steam deck. The emulators are almost there :)
God, I’m so damn excited for this to get an Emulator to play it on. I’m wondering it being so similar to the Switch 1 will speed up the process because of the similarity or not
