The relationship between the French and Haitian revolutions is interesting and complex.
Some French revolutionaries believed in Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity (but not for blacls cmon let’s not go too far here!)
Then others like the Societé des Amis des Noirs felt that liberation had to include ending slavery too.
France abolished slavery throughout its empire in 1794, and the Haitian revolution in its last phase 1801-1803 was really against the Napoleonic counterrevolution which had reinstated slavery in Guadeloupe. The Haitians feared he’d do the same there.
