A 39-year-old rock climber is facing a slate of attempted murder charges over an alleged plot to kill random people at a Smith Rock climbing event this weekend.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office arrested Samson Zebturiah Garner on Thursday and took him to the county jail on several charges each of attempted murder of multiple victims, attempted first degree assault, attempted second degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Law enforcement recovered a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun and an AR-15 from Garner when he was arrested. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office seized those weapons under an extreme risk protection order during the arrest, meaning the courts will take those guns away for at least a year.

What a wild story! Sounds like the cops were ahead of him though. Man worked in IT. I wanna know what wore him this far down.

The gun stores weren’t. Additionally, the pro-gun community opposes the measures that took his guns away.

Not at all surprised. What’s with only taking them away for a year? Isn’t this a felony, meaning he should lose his right to own guns for life.

As another commenter pointed out, yes if found guilty it’s a lifetime firearms ban, if not he’s still out those guns for minimum of a year.

Functionally a ban on buying guns from gun stores. He can still easily buy an arsenal of semi-automatic weapons by buying them privately without a background check – again, thanks to the pro-gun community.

Unless it’s to a family member, including non-immediate family like cousins and uncles, or the spouses of cousins and uncles.

Not exactly water tight but it looks like Oregon’s gun laws are better than most places.

Which of course means that gun-lobby groups pour millions into fighting them and sheffifs proudly declare they won’t uphold the laws, despite those laws being democratically decided and literally their job.

Yeah, this came up when I posted it to the Portland group:

“Gunnels, the Deschutes County prosecutor, said Central Oregon law enforcement became aware of Garner after Portland police received tips about the potential shooting.”

Portland police started working with County law enforcement on Monday, when they found he was en route to the county on Thursday, they rounded him up.

The article basically stated he was picked up on his way to the event, yet was charged with attempted murder? Is that some quirk of Oregon law, or did he do something else that the article didn’t mention?

      Orwellian… no?

It’s laudable that they intercepted the guy, but I have some minor concerns about exactly how they knew what he was thinking, and some serious concerns about the fact that they intend to prosecute him for thinking it.

May as well just overtly prosecute it as thoughtcrime and send the dude off to the Big Brother School of Rehabilitation for some programming…

Garner is a Portland resident who has worked as an information technology professional in the past … had a “generalized anger.”

The whole thing smells like another incel story to me. Makes me wonder if he got romantically rejected by someone (because IT nerd) and was going to damn well show that someone what a Real Man he is!

Although this situation is potentially realistic, we can’t stoop to prejudicial thinking, which really makes us no better than a racist or bigot fucking with minority classes, believe it or not, many virgin men do not want to murder people. Let the evidence tell us what crimes he is guilty or innocent of, potentially some motive, and then mete out the necessary punishment. I do not defend misogyny, I despise it.

The only certainty is we are lucky they caught him before he was able to act on the alleged plot.
