What I find most frustrating about this kind of incident is this:
There is fucking nothing that would prevent humanity from actually building a ‘smart’ bed. Something that gives you data and allows you to control heating etc. based on this data, without these features being a liability.
This would’ve been possible decades ago and technological advancements have made building reliable software easier ever since. But unregulated capitalism means that instead of using this to actually build reliable software, it’s rather used to cut costs. You still get the same unreliable mess.
And the worst part is that this isn’t even in the interest of capitalism either. Sending shivers down the spine of any experts that hear about your smart device means that excitement among potential customers won’t be excessive either.Smart bed is fine. … Why does it need an internet connection at all, let alone a live one!?
Fuck these absolutely vile data harvesting trash companies that don’t even remember how to do things locally…
Because you want to sleep like on a cloud.
How else can you get reoccurring revenue through a subscription if you can’t remotely brick the device someone paid $2700 for?
It sounds stupid (and it kinda is) but modern smart beds track all your vitals and give you a readout of your brainwaves with suggestions on how to improve your sleep.
I can totally understand how people desperate for sleep would buy one.
It’s mostly marketing fluff plus that thing where more data != more knowledge, but I do get it. Sleep deprivation is the worst.
Literally none of that requires a live connection, or a connection at all if they add even an RPi5’s amount of compute to the bed.
Sure, you and I know that. Most people don’t.
I wasn’t talking about what’s necessary, but how it’s marketed. Most people don’t even know enough to have accounts on Lemmy.
It’s all fun and games until your $1200 bed folds you into a pretzel in the night.
Or… you might just consider unplugging it if it gets too hot
That’s a neat idea. Turns out, you can just keep it unplugged forever with basically no downside!
I don’t feel the least bit bad about people that bought a smart bed and it getting bricked.
Stupid tax. The only sad part is that it’s used to fund yachts instead of schools.
