Widespread tsunami warnings are in place after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake, the sixth strongest on record, has hit eastern Russia with mass evacuations in place

Tsunami waves partially flooded the port and a fish processing plant in the town of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia’s Sakhalin region.The height of tsunami waves in Severo-Kurilsk exceeded 3 metres, and the most powerful was as big as 5 metres

So far, the highest wave Japan detected was 1.3 metres on its northeast coast in Iwate prefecture.

In Hawaii, the waves generated by the quake passed through Midway Atoll they were recorded at 6 feet (about 2 metres).

No serious injuries or fatalities have been reported in Russia
